GET A FEEL FOR LAKE TERRAIN (continued)

Created from data collected in 2007 and '08, the terrains layer shows Lake's varied land elevations and slopes. The data calculates the distance of an object from the ground using laser pulses.

The terrains layer has multiple uses, including modeling and analysis of study areas, flooding and land development. For the most part, it is used internally by county government, but the feature is available on Lake's new GIS interactive mapping Web site, http://gis.lakecountyfl.gov/gisweb/

According to Kevin Willis, Lake County GIS division director, the terrains layer adds depth to the interactive map. To find it, scroll to the right of the page and click on "show/hide layers," then drop down toward the bottom of the list.
